Why do Bollywood actors create controversies to remain in limelight?

There are three type of Bollywood actors and actresses including the one who are loved by the audience for their acting and the others who are ‘loved’ for their Instagram photos. Then there is a third category who neither have acing skills nor do have ‘organic’ followers on social media.

While the first category doesn’t need any news or reports on them to remain in limelight, the second and third category is desperate for any controversy that can bring them to the limelight and give them a “moment of fame”.

This moment of fame has caused much trouble for the society as it creates rumbles in the social structure only because the paid media promotes these actors and whatever they say. Most of the actors falling in second and third category have not even passed their college let alone university and their ideas and ideologies on religion, caste or class should be not even be listened to let alone ignored.

Those actors who lose relevance or never had one try to create a controversy over their small budget movies or even on social media just to grab the attention of the public. The actresses in this category also try to expose themselves on social media to get some likes. There are multiple examples of such actresses in Bollywood.

However some actors and actresses have in the past tried to create controversy ahead of their movie launch. These controversies are peddled by the paid media and digital marketing teams who with their anonymous accounts on X and other social media platforms give an impression as if common people are discussing about the controversy. This is however a tactic to grab the common people into discussions after the issue becomes a trend.

The recent example of divorce rumours between Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai also seem to have either been peddled by someone who is jealous of the family to disregard the pious institution of marriage. Deepika Padukone, Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan and others have remained in controversies ahead of their movie launch in the past.

Dating and relationship rumours are another weapon in the armoury of the digital marketing companies to keep people engaged with the low rung actors.

With the advent of social media and understanding among the users, people have now started to understand how the controversies work for promotion of movies by these actors. Some of the movies including one led by Deepika Padukone have miserably flopped due to a stunt which was received in a bad light by the public.

The Bigg Boss is another house of controversies where little known or flop entertainers come to get the limelight. However this limelight is temporary and remains only till the season goes on. With the new season, new breed of flop actors enter the house. There are allegations that Bigg Boss charges money from these entrants to give them limelight. Social media with digital marketing companies enter into the scene soon after the start of Bigg Boss and keep creating controversies.

The seasonal actors who may have some name in the industry at present may fade away within few years. However those who remain away from controversies and are considered to be a low rung actors today might shine in coming years due to advent of OTT where real talent is being given opportunity.
